Deep Freeze 2003 Wrap Up and Visuals

Spirit Award:
The players and coaches voted for the most Spirited team at Deep Freeze, and that team is Paideia! Kudos to the hard-playing Atlanta guys and their layin' out coach for further instilling in all of us the belief that Ultimate can be played with mad intensity at a level of sportsmanship unrivaled in any other sport. Way to go Paideia!

C-Bracket Finals:
This was the last game to end this year, and possibly the longest game of the tournament, because neither CCS nor Woodward JV was willing to give even an inch! These two teams offered a display of focus, patience, commitment, and teamwork that drew constant cheers from those on the sidelines. It was a tight game throughout, but CCS was able to stick the winning goal and take home the trophy.

B-Bracket:
If you missed this game, then you missed quite the spectacle... West Ultimate took on the guys from Marist, and the latter decided that they'd like to play skins, so they pulled off their shirts, added tape to protect specific areas of their bodies, and commenced to putting a chill on the sidelines spectators. Ultimately, the fully clothed West worked in the winning score and took the B-Bracket trophy with them on their 12 hour drive home. (Sidenote: The other two Wisconsin teams, Midwest Express and Mahadivas, got stuck in a snow storm and had to hole up in Southern Illinois. Reportedly, they finally made Wisconsin around 2 PM on Monday!)

A Bracket:

Quarters:

Spankin' Rock over MBA: 13 - 8
CHUF over Brutal Grassburn: 13 - 1
Paideia over Midwest Express: 13 - 8
Lexington over Woodward: 13 - 7

Semi's:
As I was paying full attention to SpankiN' Rock vs Paideia, I was unable to catch any of the action between CHUF and Lexington...

Watching SpankiN' Rock and Paideia trade points left me an emotional wreck. The attitudes these guys carried throughout the entirety of the game was no less than amazing. It was a match of skill, determination, endurance, and teamwork that exemplified the soul of Ultimate, a deep desire to give of oneself completely for the team, a selfless moment of graceful ferocity! Paideia took an early lead, but found themselves down by 1 at half. First point into the second half, SpankiN' Rock got a break when a Paideia huck went awry, recovering the disc in their own endzone. Paideia put on the defensive press and trapped Rock on the line, forcing a desperate dump pass, when, out of nowhere, a dark-shirted Paideian flew through the air like an Ultimate vulture, snagging its plastic prey and dragging it down for a Callahan goal to tie the game 7-7!! And, the game was capped. The infamous "universe point," next score wins. SpakniN' Rock received the disc. Paideia moved in quickly and took control, making the D, sticking the winning goal, ending the game 8-7. One of the best games of Ultimate I've ever watched - my hat goes off to both SpankiN' Rock and Paideia - two of the most impressive teams in the sport of Ultimate.

Paideia over Spankin' Rock: 8 - 7
CHUF over Lexington: 13 - 3

Finals:
I watched this game intermittently, between cleanup duties and the B and C finals. CHUF seemed to have a squad of 10,000 towering giants dressed in green. CHUF was fresh from a long rest, while Paideia was still recovering from their grueling game with Rock. Again, Paideia offered an amazing display of determination and teamwork, patience and an attitude of positivity that carried them beyond where their fatigued muscles were otherwise willing to go. Ultimately, CHUF's height and depth of roster proved too much for Paideia, and CHUF carried the game on it's towering shoulders.

CHUF over Paideia: 15 - 8
